From the Director..

I can say with out a doubt, the 2004 -05 school year has been the best year thus far. So many goals were achieved. Each ensemble had more performances than in previous years. The number of participants in the Oberlin School Orchestra program remains steady and the standard continues to improve.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that helped in making this such a successful year. Oberlin College donated tickets enabling many students to attend the Artist Recital Concerts. The Music Education Department provided practicum students to work with Middle School students during the

school day. FOTO (Friends of the Orchestra ) members continually stepped up to assist with tasks that included monetary donations and repair shop transportation to organizing receptions at the conclusion of concerts.
The Summer is winding down quickly and the new school year is just around the corner. I know, the best is yet to come....

The Oberlin High School Orchestra proved to be up to the challenge of "Touring". What began as a typical school year with the Winter Concert in early December, ended in a Concert Tour that included four performances in one day. The Wednesday, May 18th schedule started with an 8:30am Concert at Langston Middle School. The Orchestra boarded their charter motor coach for a 10:30am performance at Prospect Elementary School. Following a luncheon at the Oberlin Inn, the Orchestra headed to the High School for the 1:30pm performance for the entire student body. It was then time to go home, relax for a few hours, pack, and prepare for the 7:30pm performance for family, friends, and relatives that same evening. At the conclusion of the evening performance, the students loaded the bus and headed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to prepare for a High School Exchange and Concert at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. In the next few days, they attended an Educational Workshop, a Concert Performance of the Philadelphia Pops Orchestra, visited historic sites, and enjoyed the excitement of the "Big City". They returned to Oberlin Sunday morning and were back in regular classes on Monday morning. The Philadelphia Tour was a well deserved reward for the fruits of their labor.
It is now time to prepare for the New School Year. May 19-22, 2006, the Oberlin High School Orchestra will be participating in a Performance Cruise Tour to the Bahamas aboard the Royal Caribbean Cruise ship "Sovereign of the Seas". Fund raising has begun and repertoire is being selected.
This year's class requirements will include an "Etiquette" Unit, where students will become acquainted with the social skills necessary to display proper decorum.
We leave nothing to chance at OHS...
