OBERLIN SCHOOL ORCHESTRA

MISSION STATEMENT

The ultimate goal of education in public schools should be to help children lead rich and satisfying personal lives and to help them learn to participate constructively in a democratic society.  Therefore, the school should provide an environment in which each child can develop his/her fullest potential.  Each child should have ample opportunity to discover and develop his/her relation to other human beings. While gaining an appreciation of individual human differences s/he must also understand the common humanity which all people share and the value of effective social interchange and cooperative solution to problems of social living.

Music, a discipline in the Fine Arts, provides a cultural enrichment through aesthetic experience.  It aids in the development of the total person as a vehicle for self expression and socialization.  Music is interdisciplinary.  It develops the intelligence so necessary for all other learning.  Music in the schools reaches students of various backgrounds, races, and abilities.  Some select music as a vocation and others as a therapeutic experience, but all working together, reach a common goal.
